The secret of the wines of La Viarte? Their simplicity.
“La Viarte” is located in the area of the eastern hills of Friuli, one of the nine DOC areas (Denomination of Controlled Origin) that has always been dedicated to the production of wines of great personality and character. “La Viarte”, which in Friulan language means “Spring”, is a company that has always been characterized by the autochthonous vines attention and enhancement. As a matter of fact there are eight varieties of autochthonous vines that the founder, Giulio Ceschin, planted at the very beginning of his adventure: Schioppettino, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pignolo, Refosco, Tazzelenghe, Verduzzo and Piccolit. In addition to the autochthonous varieties “La Viarte” also takes care of a large variety of important international grapevines such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Cabernet and Merlot. At “La Viarte” 27 of the 41 hectares that make up the estate are dedicated to the vines, while the remaining is pure and simple woodland in order to preserve the landscape and their natural balanced microclimate.
The company activities began in 1973 and after 11 years of terracing for their vines, planting and working on a very functional and modern winery in 1984 they start marketing and gaining some recognitions.
In 2013 “La Viarte” enhances with the arrival of a new owner, Alberto Piovan, a real-estate entrepreneur with a great passion for wine and a strong desire to manage a winery. In harmony with the oenological tradition guaranteed by Giulio Ceschin, Alberto proposes to spread the name and style of “La Viarte” company without altering its true values and philosophy granting healthy and balanced wines following the EEC program for a drastic reduction of the use of pesticide and fertilizers in agriculture. As a matter of fact in 2013 “La Viarte” has been selected by the Institute belonging to the Agricultural Research Council (CRA) for an innovative project that proposes to experiment new procedures that combine tools and techniques of precision survey and allow an efficient farm management of water and nutritional balance of vineyard soils. Moreover this research proposes the study of natural soil fertilization throughout a series of accurate surveys and special studies and to optimize the water supply systems in emergencies irrigation. At this stage the project is focused on four varieties of vineyards which are Friulano and Sauvignon for white wines, Schioppettino and Pignolo for red wines. All this for the benefit of a natural and organic production which has in the wines its best expression.
All the red wines are very interesting. The leading one is the exquisite and full-bodied Merlot, then the sincere and impressive “Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso”, an elegant and sober Schioppettino and a remarkable Tazzelenghe. Special mentions go to the red Cuvee “Roi” with a Bordeaux blend and to Pignolo, an intriguing and exquisite wine with great personality that expresses all its elegance after 24 months’ maturation into barriques and then into bottles for 2-3 years. This elegant wine shows an intense ruby red, shading into purple, with notes of morello cherry, plums, black pepper and coffee that make it ingriguing. Dry and full-bodied wine with pleasant jam, berries and aromatic spieces aftertaste. A warm, ethereal, intense, and vaguely reminiscent of tar note make it different from all the other wines without being in any way unpleasant. It perfectly matches with game, spicy meats and mature cheeses.
Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, the elegant Pinot Bianco, the brilliant Pinot Grigio, the clean and fresh cuvée named Inco and, then, the wonderful and exciting Passito called Sium dominate uncontested the list of white wines.
In particular the Sauvignon 2013 “Liende” that in Friulan means “legend”, is a wine to keep in mind for it is really a great wine and a legend. Its aroma and perfect harmony between sight, smell and taste make it fully entitled to be the star pupil. It is a wine with unique varietal characteristics due to the clonal and “mass” selection of the grapes from a more than forty years old vineyard.
Sauvignon Alberto Piovan is the new entry. At a glance what strikes it is its straw yellow color and its intense aromas of white elder flowers in spring, fresh fruit, very ripe pears and white paste peaches; hints of peppers and sage with a pleasant aftertaste of tomato leaf and citrus complete this wine then enhanced by a nice acidity. It nicely goes with raw fish starters, oysters, high-quality shell-fish and mushroom-based dishes and veloutés.
